Quickly Locate Objects in Sublayers

Here’s a handy tip if you work with a bunch of Layers. Illustrator can automatically expand and scroll to a sublayer that’s hidden within a collapsed layer. All you have to do is click on the object in your artwork and choose Locate Object from the Layers panel menu. The sample image below is taken from CS6 but should work in older versions of Illustrator.

Illustrator CS6 Gradients on Strokes Sneak Peak

Adobe made another Illustrator CS6 sneak peak video. This time showcasing Gradient Strokes in CS6! It has always been a work around to create faux gradient strokes in Illustrator. This usually included faking the strokes in the Appearance panel or creating complicated blends. According to the video, this will be a great deal easier in Illustrator CS6. I’m looking forward to the changes. How are the changes stacking up for you? Thinking of upgrading?

Shape Builder Tool as Paint Bucket

Shape Builder Tool as Paint Bucket
When the Shape Builder tool came out in CS5, it wasn’t really on my radar. I have a set of actions and keyboard shortcuts setup for the different Shape Modes from the Pathfinders panel. I didn’t really need a new tool to replace my workflow. After using it more and more, I’m coming around to thinking it’s a pretty powerful tool and I really like to use it as a Paint Bucket.

Paint Bucket

I like to use the Shape Builder tool as a paint bucket when filling traced artwork.Traditionally, I would use the Live Paint Bucket, but using the Shape Builder tool works a little faster in some situations and also doesn’t require expanding after applying fills. Moreover, using the Shape Builder tool gives you the Pathfinder capabilities that make editing and cleaning up the traced artwork really easy.

Save Width Profiles

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 07:37 AM PDT

I love using Illustrator’s Width Profiles (CS5 and up) but I hate accidentally deleting the custom widths I’ve created. There’s no great way to save custom profiles like you do when saving other custom libraries like brushes, swatches, and graphic styles. The best way I’ve found to save them is by applying the custom profile to an object and saving a graphic style. From there you can save a custom graphic style library.

Fix Overlapping Custom Art Brush Strokes

Fix Overlapping Custom Art Brush Strokes
I like scanning a bunch of different brush strokes to create custom Illustrator Art Brushes. When I create these brushes from the outlined scanned artwork I sometimes get this weird overlapping effect that’s really annoying. I’ve been hunting around for a solution and finally found one. To be honest, I’m not really sure I understand why it works, but it does, so I guess that’s fine.

The Problem

Take a look at the image below from a scanned custom Art Brush I made. See were the path overlaps and you seen the reversed effect? That’s what I don’t want to happen.
Overlapping Stroke

The Fix

The fix is pretty easily, but again, I’m not complete sure what Illustrator is doing or what these functions mean.
Select the artwork you’re going to create the brush with and from the Attributes panel select the Non-Zero Winding Fill Rule. Now create your Art Brush like normal and your good to go! Weird, right?

Move Pattern Tiles Manually

I get some great email questions from Vectips readers and sometimes they even answer their own questions, making for great tips! Which leads me to… you can use the tilde (~) key to mannually move pattern tiles. For example, select an object with a pattern tile applied to it, hold down the tilde key, and move it with the arrow keys or one of the selection tools! Pretty handy.
