Surreal Saturday – Surreal and Cryptic works of Joao Ruas


The intricate lines, beautiful play of colors, surreal and cryptic imagery are what best describes the work of Sao Paulo visual artist Joao Ruas.  Fans of DC’s Vertigo Fables would easily remember his work since Joao was commissioned to do stunning covers. Apart from Fables Joao’s stunning work is also showcased in art shows and in top publications like Wired, Sunday Times and Playboy. He has also successfully published his very own art book entitled: “Yore”.

Everything starts out with a concept most specially in movies, games even in advertising as well. This why concept art is a necessary part of the design process since in concept art everything is tackled like how will the creature look at when it is in action, how does light affects it and how big will it be against other creatures. Australian concept artist Luke Mancini is one of amazing concept artist that everyone should check out. His fantastic work in Starcraft 2 is a joy to see and most specially if you grew up playing the game back in ’98. Other than Starcraft, Luke aka *Mr. Jack in Deviantart also worked on projects such as the World of Warcraft trading card game and Privateer Press’ Warmachine making his style and work really diverse and amazing to look at for inspiration.
